Governor Rick Snyder said, “to build a stronger Michigan, we must build a healthier Michigan.” The Affordable Care Act is giving us a huge opportunity to build that healthier Michigan by extending insurance coverage to more Michiganders through Medicaid.

As of 2010, approximately 1,086,000 nonelderly Michiganders were without health insurance. Medicaid expansion would increase eligibility to 1.2 million people, about half of whom are currently uninsured.

Michigan will experience a net savings of about $1 billion if it expands Medicaid.

Medicaid expansion is a crucial piece to build a healthier Michigan in order to build an economically stronger Michigan!

Letter to
Governor of Michigan Governor Rick Snyder
Dear Governor Snyder:

I am urging you to fully support the Medicaid expansion. As you’ve said, “to build a stronger Michigan, we must build a healthier Michigan.” The Affordable Care Act is giving us a huge opportunity to build that healthier Michigan by extending insurance coverage to more Michiganders through Medicaid.

Michiganders need health insurance. As of 2010, approximately 1,086,000 nonelderly Michiganders were without health insurance. Medicaid expansion would increase eligibility to 1.2 million people, about half of whom are currently uninsured.

Medicaid expansion makes financial sense. The federal government picks up 100% of the tab for the expansion’s first three years. The Center for Healthcare Research and Transformation projects that Michigan will experience a net savings of about $1 billion if it participates.

Medicaid expansion will help make Michiganders healthier. Research from the Institute of Medicine shows that it’s bad for your health to not have health insurance.

Medicaid expansion will also benefit hospitals and those with private health insurance. Michigan’s hospitals struggle with the burden of providing uncompensated care to the uninsured, and the costs are reflected in what employers and individuals pay to purchase private health insurance. If we expand Medicaid, we could accrue between $640 to $985 million in savings over the next 10 years to those who purchase private insurance, and hospitals will likely experience a reduction in uncompensated care expenses.

We’ve got to build a healthier Michigan in order to build an economically strong Michigan. We need to start now. Medicaid expansion is a crucial piece of this puzzle. Please fully support Medicaid expansion.
