Without Lockers, We Carry Everything In Our Backpacks. They Can Weigh 25% Of Our Body Weight. It’s Time To Change That.
Key Biscayne Girl Scout Troop 385 presented a Resolution asking the Florida Legislature to address the potential health impact of heavy school backpacks and to take proactive measures to reduce backpack weight. Representative Emily Slosberg is sponsoring our Resolution.
Heavy Backpacks Hurt Children:
- Poor Posture, Curvature of the Spine, and Spinal Deformities
- Pain, Headaches, Numbness, and Tingling of Fingers
- About 6,000 Children Are Treated In Emergency Rooms Each Year For Pain Related To Backpack Use.
- About 60% Of Children Will Have Back Pain By The Age Of 18.
It is time for Florida to join states like Tennessee that have passed Resolutions to address heavy school backpacks and reduce backpack weight for all public school children.
