As an elected Portsmouth School Board Member in the Commonwealth of Virginia, I am asking for your signature in support of universal pre-kindergarten. We often invest our resources in the traditional K-12 education; however, we overlook the importance of the foundation of education, which is early literacy. By the time a child is 3 years of age, their brain has cognitively developed 85%. This means by the age of 3, a child should master the skills of letter and number recognition, phonological awareness, print awareness and writing skills. Preschool years specifically between ages 3-5 are critical years for a child's rapid brain development. Studies show that early literacy sets the positive educational blueprint for a prosperous student.
Universal pre-kindergarten will allow our children/students to develop the necessary skills during those pivotal years. If we are going to continue to support the 'No Child Left Behind Act', we have to become cognitive of the implementation of preventative measures with actual positive results. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to contact me via email at email@example.com. Thank you for your time, and let's work on making this change together.
