Crystal Carpenter started this petition to Governor Ralph Northam and

This petition is to recognize the parents of Virginia students that do NOT want their children to masked in the classroom without breaks for upwards of 7-10 hours a day. To speak on behalf of the children whom have been silence and rights for full breathes in the classroom denied.

The ever changing recommendations of the CDC have cause great confusion and show little evidence off the effectiveness of mask usage to contain viral transmission with all day mask usage in children. Evidence in other states with reduce usage however, has shown that strict mask mandates in the classrooms are not necessary. As these States level of spread of COVID 19 have not increased with either a relaxed mask policy or an optional mask policy in the classroom.

There is no way to police the cleanliness of the mask that can go unwashed or unchanged for the students of Virginia for days or more at a time posing a greater health risk. Mask make children and staff touch their faces more that usual causing increase risk for cross contamination of both bacteria and viruses. The mask can be a distraction, especially for small children, those with disabilities, or sensory issues. They are problematic for students in programs such as music and athletics. Masked they are not able to preform to their full potential with their faces covered and oxygen intake limited.

Prolonged mask usage can cause acne, enough so that there is a new term called "Maskne", causing not only discomfort but lowered self esteem.  They can potentially contribute to breathing issues, headaches, and overheating, especially in the heat of days over 75 degrees which we will be experiencing over the next several months in Virginia. A child that is a bus rider or evolved in extra curricular activities could be wearing a mask for upwards of 10 hours a day with facial obstruction and reduced oxygen intake. Let that sink in.

The current mask mandate in Virginia schools is forcing to children to wear a mask regardless of that child's overall well being or development. A blanket policy of masking children is not only ineffective but for many students is causing phycological harm as well. By mandating mask usage all day we are also teaching children to be fearful of each other. If this continues it will undoubtedly cause long term negative phycological effects for the students of Virginia. Research shows childhood depression and suicide have dramatically risen this past year due to lack of socialization.  Mask usage are causing much more harm in our children than benefits.

With increased access of vaccines and lowered community spread in adults. We ask that you make mask for students optional or at the very least give them breaks while seated at their desk, outside with good ventilation reducing the risk of overheating, and when performing. We allow all these exceptions to every adult in Virginia currently so why are we asking our children to learn in an environment where their nose and mouth must be covered for an entire school day?

Parents please sign this petition of behalf of your Virginian Student so that their learning environment is one of reasonable safety expectations and not one of the strictest mask requirements.
