Claibourne Honeysmith started this petition to Governor Ralph Northam

I want to ask Governer Northam and the Virginia Employment Commission to change the language for Partial Unemployment.

As Virginia plans to reopen, much of the workforce will be called back to work before the threat of the virus has peaked. However, the CDC recommendations show that it isn't safe to get back to certain service work because these jobs do not allow for protocol physical distancing in the course of employment. What does that mean for those of us in the Virginia service industry?

I am disappointed that so many Virginians in close contact businesses are being pushed through with Phase 1 reopening to appease the general public and boost morale. This comes with great risk including an unsafe work environment and continued income loss for these workers who must operate at partial capacity to comply with continuing restrictions.

Whether you are a server whose restaurant is going to be at half-capacity, a hairstylist who is having to book limited appointments, or a barber who has to implement pre-booking for the first time: your loss should be compensated.

Since this is the case, I ask for the state to grant access to Partial Unemployment to those whose income is not based at an hourly rate while health and safety restrictions remain in place.

By signing this petition, you are helping service industry workers return to work safely, you are protecting the community from spread of the virus, and you are preventing the industry from having to bill the consumer for its losses.
