Governor Pat Quinn: We Stand with You to Raise the Illinois Minimum Wage!

“Nobody in Illinois should work 40 hours a week and live in poverty. That’s a principle as old as the Bible. Senator Kimberly Lightford, you are doing the right thing with your mission to raise the minimum wage.”  –Governor Pat Quinn

Governor Quinn is right, people that work for a living should make enough money to provide for themselves and their family. No one should be working full-time and still not be able to make ends meet. Currently that is the struggle of the minimum wage worker in Illinois.

The current Illinois minimum wage of $8.25 an hour, or $16,500 a year for a full-time worker, is keeping people in poverty. If the minimum wage had kept pace with inflation over the last 40 years, it would be over $10 an hour today. An increased minimum wage would create thousands of new jobs in Illinois, boost the local economy, and allow every family to access economic security.

A recent poll shows that 71 percent of Illinoisans support increasing the state’s minimum wage. Tell Governor Quinn that you support him in standing up for working families in Illinois.
