Dear Governor Mills, Dr. Shah, Maine DHHS, Maine Principals Association:

We are writing this letter in support of changing High School football from the high risk category.  Students were not allowed to play last fall and we implore you to change football’s classification in Maine effective immediately.

Last summer the decision was pushed back several times and wasn’t made until very close to the start of the season.  This made it impossible for players to make other arrangements to play in another state.  Many of these young men have worked exceptionally hard and look forward to the end result of playing the game.  Others aspire to go on to play college football and have been sidelined for an entire season unnecessarily.

Our son, Austin, in particular has dreamed of playing football in college and has worked very hard to make that dream a reality.  Unfortunately, the decisions made at the state level prevented him from playing his junior season, which is a crucial part of the college recruiting process.  If a decision to make this change is not made soon, he will be forced to go to another state to play.  For our son and most others, this decision needs to be made by June 1, 2021.  This is not something he wants nor do we, but it will have to happen to give him an opportunity to play in college.  We understand fully that if this is happening to our son, it is also happening to others.  Please do not allow the students of the State of Maine to leave the state to finish high school in order to play football. Being forced to leave family, friends and homes seems completely unnecessary and cruel.

Football is played outside where transmission has been deemed to be so small masking mandates have been lifted.  The players wear padding and helmets and the individual interactions are for short periods of time lasting only seconds.  There can be a face shield placed on the helmet.  For all these reasons, we feel this can be played in as safe a manner as other outdoor sports.  Kids have lost so much in the last year and we beg you to not allow football to be another one.
