Governor Lujan-Grisham,

For as long as I can remember, friends and family have spent the 4th of July with water hoses, fire extinguishers, etc., on hand, not for their own fireworks, but for the irresponsible and highly illegal displays of their neighbors. Arial fireworks, bottle rockets, etc, may be banned in Albuquerque, but a 30 minute drive will allow anyone to obtain the types of fireworks meant only for carefully controlled public displays. This is dangerous on many levels. Those with heart conditions, or severe anxiety are essentially besieged in their own homes by deafening booms. New Mexico is a tinderbox this time of year, and these explosives in the hands of inexperienced, ignorant people are wildfires waiting to happen. In my family's neighborhood, there's a history of fires started due to these fireworks. Weeks of multiple complaints yield absolutely no response. As I write this, I am watching a group set off these fireworks in a dry field near Indian School and Broadway. I know our fire department is overwhelmed this time of year, but this dangerous, selfish behavior continues because the people instigating it face absolutely no consequences for their actions, unless a home is set ablaze, or someone is injured, and even then it's iffy if charges are filed. Illegal, professional level fireworks should not be to sale for the public AT ALL STATE WIDE. Stands such as the ones in Moriarty need to either adhere to safety laws regarding the types of fireworks sold, or be shut down. These types of stands operate year round. Please consider the safety of your citizens when it comes to illegal fireworks, and consider the safety and mental health of your first responders and emergency room staff who have to treat the sometimes grievous injuries resulting from these dangerous explosives in the hands of irresponsible citizens. Our firefighters should not have to put themselves in danger to extinguish wildfires that are 100% preventable, and our beautiful state should not burn due to a handful of selfish people. We have enough going on in our state right now to have to pull valuable resources for things that should be able to easily be prevented.
