The state of Oklahoma needs to change the law to recognize EMS as an essential service. EMS is no less essential the Fire or Police yet, the state has yet to acknowledge EMS legally as an essential service. The state provides funding for Police and Fire depts yet EMS receives no state funding. EMS is funded mostly by payment collection, county taxes and city agreements with private services. Emergency Medical workers ARE the lowest paid public service on average. Yet are required to maintain the most educational requirements. We are expected to know Cardiology, medications and interactions, treatment of trauma and medical emergencies, how to gain and maintain advanced airways, start ivs, ios, and medication Administration. Plus how all these things work within the body and what effects they have. Yet EMS providers across the state are forced to work multiple jobs to make ends meat because the funding just isn't there by the state. Alot of providers are leaving EMS to become RNs or just leaving all together. Until the COVID-19 pandemic hit most people didnt give a second thought to EMS until they needed us. Now people understand we put our health and safety on the line just like our brothers and sister in blue and red. Please help your EMS providers get the state funding to be able to provide the best and safest care possible. By allowing them to not have to work 48-72  hrs straight to provide for their families.
