Governor Kelly Needs to Address Safety & Wellbeing of Inmates in KDOC
KDOC is ranked in some studies as the 13th worst penal system in America. It is no secret that Kansas is wrought with the "good ol boy system" that is not going anywhere soon. Jay-Z is taking on Wyandotte County. CoreCivic in Leavenworth is possibly a bigger hellhole and more dangerous than Lansing Correctional and undergoing lawsuits there. CoreCivic as a private sector prison and its ill built, dangerous, insufficient prisons are NOT what Kansans want to pay for! Our Governor made the choice to utilize them and yet, remains silent. Her answer was to do a Federal "Emergency" call and take the federal funds but then refuses to put the National Guard in until the steady exodus of guards can be stopped and new staff trained. In the interim, Gov. Kelly, Jeff Zumuda (Sec of Corrs) and his crew have decided that the best answer to this long known, ongoing issues, is to punish the inmates and their families.
They have ceased all programming, broken civil rights laws by not allowing proper time out of cells, no outdoors activities, not enough food, bad food, no contact with families and no programming, rehabilitation or call outs.
The hardest part to understand in this charade is that there seems to be only the MAX yards paying this price. Everyone else is "business as usual" aside from the cessation of visitation. So the memo sent to families on Thanksgiving night no less, is inaccurate. They have allowed everyone in the institutions to remain the same but the max inmates and their families. They lied and tried to hid the truth that they are simply punishing the maximum security inmates, regardless that both attacks didn't happen due to them. One attack was in medium yard and one was by a recently placed mental inmate in general population. The answer to all their failings and all their mismanagement is to punish maximum security inmates. They are treated subhuman. It has to stop.
As families of these maximum security inmates (and all inmates) we demand that while this staff shortage crisis is addressed, we are allowed visitation. Normal, typical visitation. We are even willing to have two a month instead of one hour every weekend. But we demand something from KDOC. Call in the National Guard. Continue the hiring events and keep contact with the families. Its that simple.
We also call on Kansas political figures and attorneys to join in and do what is right. Everyone in Kansas cannot be a coward. It looks that way but we implore those in the position to help alleviate this torture, mismanagement and rediculous and calculated targeting to be brought to light. Measures taken to fix the ancient laws and rules on Kansas books and true reform brought to the Kansas penal system. As tax payers, we are watching and we vote. What is YOUR platform?
GIVE US VISITATION. GIVE OUR LOVED ONE'S PROGRAMS, CALL OUTS, EDUCATION, FOOD, FRESH AIR!!!!
