Ohio veterinarians are on the honor system. The Board of Health is not required to check animal hospitals. There is no system of random, unannounced inspections of animal hospitals, as is done in other states by their vet boards.
The Ohio Vet Board must give five-day advance, written notice before an inspection. Wouldn't any of us enjoy a five-day advance, written notice before our supervisor came to check out work because of a complaint?
So, who is checking on Ohio's pet vets? - Sadly, no one.
Ohio animals, as patients, Ohio pet owners, as consumers, and Ohio veterinarians, as colleagues, deserve effective, companion animal health care.
