My son, Daleshonne Square was sentenced to 45 years in prison because he had a hand gun in the commission of a crime. He doesn’t have a criminal history, he has never been to prison before ever in his life and he is not a juvenile offender. He is a victim of racial discrimination and a victim of the way the laws are written, but used mostly against young African American men to decrease our population and to make money for the criminal justice system which is really injustice for us. My family is a military family. I have three sons, they traveled overseas and around in America while I served in the Army, and is now retired. I never had disorderly trouble from either of my sons, and I am proud of the men they are today. There was no reason for my son to be sentenced to 45 years in prison. No one was harmed. There was a threat made on a pizza delivery person, which was a young white girl. A crime that made no sense, because my son had experimented with a drug. He is not an abuser of alcohol and he does not regularly nor commonly use drugs. He could have been placed on a program for first time affenders instead of locking him up and throwing away the key. The lawyer I hired never spoke up to defend my son but instead worked with the prosecutor and the Judge to threaten a guilty plea from him to lock him away as though it was a business deal. He has been in prison now almost ten years with no parole and I say he has been in there for too long already
