My son is a hockey player and hockey is one of the safest sports. Fully covered with pads/helmet/gloves. Don’t touch puck with hands, and safe to play.

If allowed to have games and normal practices (minus checking), hockey officials and families will ensure that strict guidelines and precautions are in place so that our kids can be physically active, developing their skills, bond socially with their teammates (physically distanced as necessary), and stay busy in activities they love instead of resorting to video games and less desirable alternatives.

Our son thrives on activity and hockey in particular. He needs this season! He needs it as a break from the social deprivation that results from all the cancellations. He needs it physically; no contact practice 2/wk is a meager routine compared to the travel schedule he and his teammates maintained in past years. This could have a serious impact on their long-term involvement in the sport as well as their health due to lower physical activity. Being involved in sports, especially demanding ones, keep teens busy and out of trouble.

Players have gloves and other protective gear and only use a hockey stick to contact the shared puck. It is ridiculous to think that this sport is rated higher risk than basketball, where players are maskless while guarding, blocking, and posting other players in close proximity, sharing their own breathing space, and sharing the same ball. Similar arguments surround a comparison with soccer, though ball contact is not an issue. Yet, kids all over the state (political numbers seem to be a factor here) are busy playing basketball and soccer this fall, sometimes both, while our hockey kids are expected to drastically reduce the skill level of their practices, and the amount of ice/activity time even though the actual risk of spreading illness through hockey is dramatically less for their sport.

If allowed to have games and normal practices (minus checking), hockey league officials and families will ensure that strict guidelines and precautions are in place so that our kids can be physically active, developing their skills, bond socially with their teammates (physically distanced as necessary), and stay busy in activities they love instead of resorting to video games and less desirable alternatives.

PLEASE reclassify hockey!
