Kimblyn Persaud started this petition to Governor Hogan and

Wheaton along with Bethesda and Silver Spring is 1 of 3 Arts and Entertainment Districts in Montgomery County.  Wheaton is a place that is ready to be a destination, but in order to create that destination, we must create a place that people will want to come.

This is where government plays a pivotal role, in determining how a community looks and more importantly how it's viewed by others. This is why it's important Wheaton not be further stigmatized by street barriers that the state and county insist on installing on Georgia Ave.

The State Highway Administration (SHA) originally planned to install a 6 foot fence down the middle of Georgia Ave, between Reedie and Price (between Safeway and Duncan Donuts).  When Luisa Montero, Mid-County Director and others protested, the SHA accepted their counter offer of 470 feet of metal cables BUT, SHA would no longer pay for any of it.  This is unacceptable!

Wheaton is an Arts and Entertainment District.  These type of metal barriers are not welcoming; they’re not attractive and they’re only being used in communities where there’s a large number of Blacks and immigrants.  These type of barriers project a negative image, and it will affect the type businesses we will be able to attract.

Working with the Master Gardeners at Brookside Gardens, they helped to identify several slow growing, low maintenance shrubs which were presented to SHA and to MoCoDOT, along with the idea that creative and attractive barriers could be installed.  A precedent has been established by SHA, illustrating their willingness to work with other communities such as Ocean City and Downtown Silver Spring, to deliver an attractive, creative, cohesive and safe environment. Wheaton deserves the same consideration.

We want more transparency in this process. We want SHA and MoCoDOT to include the people living in Wheaton in the decision-making process, like they’re doing in Silver Spring and have done in Ocean City.  We want mature shrubbery that hides the fencing and creative protective barriers for the narrow portion of Georgia Ave.

Sign the No More Metal Pedestrian Barrier petition, Let’s tell the state and the county, that Wheaton shouldn't be punished for wanting to instill pride in our community, and for seeing our potential.  We can start the process with creative and beautiful streetscapes on Georgia Ave., that reflect the Arts and Entertainment District that we are.
