Concerned Texas Citizens started this petition to Governor Greg Abbott and

Families with loved ones in nursing homes and long term care facilities in Texas have spent much of the last year and a half separated and alone.  Visitation options are limited and largely impersonal (e.g., drive by visits, plexiglass visits).  While there may have been good and valid reasons for such restrictions in the past in order to protect the health of long term care residents, such limitations need to be reevaluated in light of the increasing numbers of vaccinated residents of Texas.

Many residents in long term facilities have now been fully vaccinated.  Many relatives of those in long term care facilities have been fully vaccinated or will be in the very near future.  Despite these facts the visitation rules put in place in September 2020 remain unchanged.  As a result, a fully vaccinated resident and a fully vaccinated relative are unable to visit one-on-one without adhering to essential caregiver restrictions which include full PPE, Covid testing, restrictions on the number of such caregivers, etc.  At the same time, staff in long term care facilities are not required to be vaccinated.  So while unvaccinated staff are able to interact with residents daily, fully vaccinated relatives are not.

If the Governor has determined that it is time to fully reopen Texas and eliminate the requirement to wear a mask, surely it is time to allow fully vaccinated residents of long term care facilities, many of whom are elderly and whose time to be with family may be limited, to spend time with fully vaccinated relatives
