Why this petition matters

Started by Silvia Magana

The County of Monterey is now requiring stylist, barbers, estheticians, and nail technicians to pay a three hundred dollar permit to work from outside, most of whom have not had a stable income for over 90 days, and were unable to receive unemployment due to being self employed. We are asking for this fee to be waived.

With approval from health department and California State Board  of  Barberry and Cosmetology, we were allowed to open May 30, 2020 as long as certain guidelines were met. Please take into consideration, that when the salons where closed by the initial shelter in place announced March 13, 2020; we had no source of income. Prior to reopening, cosmetologists were required to obtain two Barbicide COVID-19 certifications, move furniture within the premises to meet 6ft guidelines and schedule clients accordingly. Additional expenses have to be made to purchase certified disinfectant, proper personal protective equipment (PPE), and COVID-19 signs that are required by the Monterey County Health Department. July 20,2020, we discovered our services have been limited to only haircuts, under a canopy. This is unsanitary according to training we had to complete from the California Board  of Barbering and Cosmetology. Having to now work outside, we are required to have a canopy, invest more money into purchasing new equipment that will allow us to work outside. We cannot account for  hazardous weather conditions, which could affect customers at other locations such as restaurants near by, or a dust of wind from oncoming traffic.
