Coalición de Derechos Humanos Tucson, Arizona started this petition to Governor Doug Ducey

Dear Governor Ducey,

As you are aware, the Trump administration has unleashed a strong anti-immigrant agenda since his election in 2016. As part of his campaign to limit even lawful migration, he has now promulgated a new regulation which dramatically expands the definition of “public charge,” and is set to take effect on October 15, 2019.

This is a clear attack on poor people, the very folks who have built our nation. We write to urge you to immediately join the lawsuit filed by 14 other states, and act to protect the citizens and residents of Arizona. As our governor, you are expected to protect those most vulnerable in our state, including the protection of vital human services currently available to those in need. If you know any history, you will fight back on the narrative that if you’re poor, you can’t succeed. Most poor people pay more in taxes than those wealthier, supporting our community in a myriad of ways.

Asking whether you know English smacks clearly of racism, and as a governor of a state that has always been blessed with Spanish and Indigenous languages, you should be appalled. Simply because a person has used Medicaid or lived in section 8, for example, should not preclude you from completing your lawful process for legal permanent residence, what’s referred to as green cards. Approximately 400,000 applicants will be subjected to this arbitrary and capricious process.

We demand that you protect our communities by immediately joining the lawsuit against this newest attack.

Sincerely,

Coalición de Derechos Humanos and Arizona Justice for Our Neighbors
