The Problem:

In the current state of the Covid-19 Epidemic in Hawaii, the local economy is in dire risk of poverty. With tourism closed down for the safety of the local community, the local economy is critical to the sustainability of the state. As more establishments are forced to shut down, the unemployment expenses are sky rocketing while the community is struggling to live.

Current shut downs put forth by Mayor Kirk Caldwell and approved by Governor David Ige, is to close down bars and establishments for 3 weeks. Closing down small businesses IS NOT THE ANSWER.

Beaches, state parks, and households are full with large parties without social distancing or masks. Clusters have been found at large gatherings, funerals, and gyms. Enforcement in the public is non-existent while small businesses are being punished.

Small businesses are trying to pivot just to stay alive, and therefore have incentive to follow sanitation guidelines to keep our community safe, employed, and our economy to heal.

The extra $600 a week in unemployment benefits from the federal government has now ended. The maximum weekly unemployment is $648, which is not a livable income, especially to those supporting families. We will soon see our economy crash and our community will be struggling to stay alive.

The Solution:

Allow locally owned bars, restaurants, manufacturers (breweries, wineries, and distilleries) to operate with strict sanitation and social distancing guidelines for dine in service. If locally owned businesses can remain open, then we can start to repair the Hawaii economy by keeping employees on payroll and paying taxes to the state.

If an establishment breaks the covid sanitation guidelines, shut them down immediately. DO NOT PUNISH THE INDUSTRY AS A WHOLE. Allow them to reopen as soon as they have sanitized and meet covid guidelines.

If cases continue to increase, then enforce stricter guidelines in places where the state taxes and employment won't be affected, places that are notorious for large gatherings that have a lack of enforcement of covid guidelines (i.e. beaches, public parks, etc).

We will use our vote, to elect candidates that support the survival of local businesses during this crisis. We will actively work to vote out candidates that ignore the poverty stricken community and ignore the need for small businesses to thrive. Our votes will not be ignored.
