University of Hawaii Students UH Manoa started this petition to Governor David Ige

This petition is in favor of instating a living wage in the state of Hawaii. The difference between minimum wage and living wage rests on the fact that minimum wage is the lowest rate an employer is allowed to pay an employee for their work and is arbitrary in context to the employee’s cost of living. In contrast, the living wage is the lowest wage at which subsistence needs can be met by an employee, that is to say, the amount a single job would need to pay in order for the employee cover cost of living expenses.

The current minimum wage in Hawaii is $10.10, and many people living in Hawaii cannot afford the basic needs in life such as affording rent, having enough money for housing, and paying for basic amenities. The minimum wage will affect working class citizen that are struggling to make ends meet. Oppositional voices tend to rely on statistics, like the data gathered by the Bureau of Labor Statistics, to emphasize that it is mainly 16-19 year old part-timers who are impacted by the minimum wage crisis. Isolating groups neglects to consider the domino effect of inadequate pay that trickles into other socioeconomic demographics. This is particularly evident in how common it is for college graduates entering the workforce to continue needing financial assistance from their parents, which widens these economic burdens impacting those outside the categorical confines of “part-timers.”

In order to achieve this change we need signatures to show Governor Ige the need, and want, for this change to happen. If this change passes it would mean people would have a better opportunity to care for not only themselves but their families as well. Our goal is to have our voices heard, by signing this petition it can help to raise the minimum wage to a living wage so that hard working citizens living in Hawaii can afford the cost of living.
