Dear Governor Baker,

We, the undersigned thank you for the measures you have put in place in attempt to slow the spread of COVID-19. Given the limited effectiveness of these measures, We urge you to immediately enact a stay-at-home order for Massachusetts. This order is necessary to:

  1. Ensure that our healthcare system can safely accommodate surging patient volume from COVID-19;
  2. Reduce case fatality and hospitalization rates in Massachusetts; and
  3. Ultimately allow Massachusetts residents to resume normal activity sooner than they would in the absence of a stay-at-home order.

With lessons taken from recent orders from New York, California, Louisiana, Delaware, and Ohio, we urge you to enact the following actions. In addition, failure to comply with these actions should constitute a criminal offense.

Leaving your home or residence for Essential Activities is permitted. Individuals may only leave their residence to carry out Essential Activities or Essential Travel.

  1.  To engage in activities or perform tasks essential to their health and safety, or to the health and safety of their family, household members, or others in the community who are vulnerable and cannot leave their home.
  2.  To obtain necessary services or supplies for themselves, their family, household, or others in the community who are vulnerable and cannot leave their home. Or to deliver those services or supplies to others that are in need.
  3. To engage in outdoor activity, providing the individuals comply with 6 feet of social distancing requirements.

Leaving your home or residence for non-essential activities should not be permitted.

We also urge the government to provide direct aid to those affected by this critically important stay-at-home order, including a moratorium on evictions and foreclosures, paid leave for all workers, immediate financial support for small businesses, and ensuring that COVID-19 medical testing and treatment is available at no charge to MA residents.
