Since March 2020 we, the NY Pharmacists, have played a major role in New York’s dramatic progress against COVID-19.  Through our daily contributions in public health and COVID-19 vaccinations and testing, together we ended the New York State of Emergency.

In contradiction to who we are and our professional training, Section 571(6) of the New York State Law prohibits pharmacists from being designated “qualified healthcare professionals.”  This law implausibly prevents us from performing Covid-19 testing during this very critical time.  It is generally agreed that pharmacies and pharmacists are the most easily accessed by the public when urgent needs arise.   Rejecting the enormous demand of Covid-19 testing at the pharmacy level is not only a big disappointment and inconvenience to our patients, but an enormous failure in health care services at a time it is most critical. We trust you agree with such a fundamentally logical and essential position, and that you will revise Section 571(6) of the New York State Law to restore New York pharmacists’ crucial roles in public health, now more than ever.
