Dear Governor Ige, Mayor Kim, Mayor Caldwell, and Mayor Kawakami,

Stop the undue biased and assault on short term rentals in Hawaii.

Short term rentals in Hawaii are an important part of the tourist experience while also being a net positive economic impact to the Island. The reduction and elimination of short term rentals will negatively affect the Island and its people.

Short term rentals in Hawaii lowers the average cost per night of accommodations in Hawaii. Removing the supply of lower cost housing will raise the cost of travel to Hawaii which will then lower the amount of tourists resulting in less money and resources for everyone. Also, renting a house or condo is a different type of travel experience not offered by hotels and targeting an entirely different traveler.  If they are removed, then there will be less people who come to Hawaii. This is basic economics.

The signatories of this petition will be negatively impacted if you continue to restrict and eliminate short term rentals. We are home owner using short term rentals to increase earnings and pay bills, service providers (e.g. landscaping, pest control, pool maintenance etc.) who work for short term rentals or retail and restaurants who benefit from an increased amount of tourists.

We are also tourists who would love to come to Hawaii but higher accommodation costs may deter our travel.

We hope you hear us,

The short term rental community in Hawaii
