Why this petition matters

Started by Debbi Corrigan

Social distancing is easy at Zoos so there is no logical reason to keep them closed. Chester Zoo and others are in great financial difficulties and as they do great things regarding conservation, breeding programmes it is important that they continue to survive and evolve, as they have over the years, keeping some species from extinction.

i understand that many people hate the idea of animals in captivity and I feel that myself, but the truth is that without the efforts of zoos etc then many species would have already died out.
i remember Chester Zoo as a child as a place where the animals were crammed into small concrete pens (the polar bear enclosure in particular made me sad) but they have improved tremendously and after watching “the secret life of the zoo” anyone can see the genuine affection the staff have for the animals and the hard work they do in keeping the numbers of endangered species up.

if tennis and golf clubs can be open and soon schools, where social distancing is hard to achieve, then why not zoos where social distancing is easy as it’s a huge outdoor area where people wander around with their family.

I am sure that it is not only the UK that has this problem so I hope this petition will reach everyone.
