Last October 1, 2020, PNP (Philippine National Police) is said to roll out body cameras. The Philippine National Police is set to distribute over 2,000 body cameras, 3 years after the murder of teenager Kian Delos Santos. But it seems like the process is taking so long.
Discussions about the procurement of body cameras began in September 2017, after Caloocan cops killed teenager Kian delos Santos . A CCTV camera caught what was believed to be the Caloocan cops dragging Delos Santos in an alley in his own community before killing him.
December 7, 2020 when PNP Drug Enforcement Group Director Chief Superintendent Joseph Adnol reacted to uproar that cops should use body cameras.
"For me, there really is no need for a body cam, our camera as policemen is God, 'yun ang pinaka-camera natin na tinitingnan tayo (He is our very camera who will watch over us)," Adnol told reporters in an interview. Adnol said they want to show that the people should trust the policeman and there's no need for such body cam but still police brutality increased over the past month and we have no idea what media doesn't tell us.
But why does this matter?
Body-worn cameras has both benefits for police and community. This serves for police to have surveillance tool to promote their safety and body cameras has been shown to drastically decrease police brutality, promote transparency and accountability in the department, assess accuracy of the nature of events articulated by officers and community members. And most importantly, improve community relationships with law enforcement.
