Taking Action Using Cap And Trade Method To Reduce Traffic Congestion In Hyderabad
Statement of Purpose - We demand that the Telangana government implement the "Cap and Trade" strategy in Hyderabad, focusing on high-carbon-emitting vehicles, as it is the best long-term sustainable solution that can be implemented quickly and strictly and has been proven to be effective in reducing traffic pollution and reducing Hyderabad's overall contribution to global climate change.
Supporting Detail - Climate change, the long-term shifts in temperatures and weather patterns is an ongoing global issue that affects the world, its environment, and humanity. These movements are mainly natural, but human activity, like driving vehicles, has lately become one of the leading causes of climate change. A typical vehicle can only function if the engine is running, and in order for it to run, it must burn the gasoline inside it, emitting dangerous greenhouse gases such as carbon dioxide into the atmosphere. This results in air pollution, which is the single largest hazard to human health worldwide; however, when every local region in the globe is added together, air pollution becomes a major issue as it causes climate change.
Our city of Hyderabad has a population of over 70 lakh people and over 50 lakh vehicles, and the population is continuing to significantly rise as a consequence of urbanisation. As a result of the city's rapid expansion, population, and vehicles, there is a lot of traffic on the roadways. Consequently, the more time a vehicle spends on the road, the more emissions it generates, if Hyderabad takes steps to address its traffic congestion issues and tries to reduce traffic on the roads and travel time, air pollution levels in the city can be reduced, benefiting human health while also reducing the city's contribution to global climate change.
Hyderabad's stakeholders have tried a variety of approaches in the past to help mitigate traffic congestion in the city; however, it has been discovered that some of these solutions are only effective in the short term, while others take a long time to implement, causing traffic and pollution levels to skyrocket in the meantime, which is not sustainable. As a result, the city of Hyderabad should look into a long-term sustainable solution that can be implemented quickly and strictly and has been proven to be effective, and the Cap and Trade system is the key plan that meets this requirement.
Cap and trade is a method of lowering air pollution in a province, and it may be used to specifically target high-carbon-emitting vehicles. The government should impose a cap on certain vehicles, such as company trucks, and provide permits to fuel firms depending on each ton of carbon released from their fuel's combustion. The city may invest in better, cleaner, and more sustainable means of transportation using the money generated by these permits. Each year, the government reduces the number of permits issued, decreasing overall cap emissions and increasing permit costs, requiring enterprises to be driven to cut emissions or invest in clean technology, which is now cheaper than buying permits. If Hyderabad implements this method, it will be a great step for climate action in the long run.
