Why this petition matters

Started by Rhiannon Hunt

We would like the government to ban dredging on our shores. For the last two years there have been no Pipi’s on our shorelines for the locals to enjoy a fun day at the beach while collecting a small feed for themselves. This is something I have experienced on the west coast near Waitarere to Foxton all the way up to the East Coast in Tokerau.

I’ve since learned this is due to the likes of the Cloudy Bay fisheries that are dredging our shorelines as close as knee deep in low tight which are then being sold for extreme prices in our supermarket and restaurants. Which I only discovered by being told yesterday that this is the reason there are none as Cloudy Bay have been seen on our shoreline dredging.

This needs to stop and a ban needs to be put in place for no dredging at least 10-20 kilometres from any land. This is killing the reproduction, it’s killing our people’s opportunity to gather a small feed of Kai Moana as they can’t afford it in the supermarkets and restaurants. It’s killing our culture of having fresh seafood at our door and the experience our people can have gathering there Kai.

This is not ok, take your dredging elsewhere and leave some Shellfish for the rest of us!! Please help by showing your support and get dredging banned!
