Hey there,

Please can everyone sign and share this petition to make it mandatory for all UK Primary Schools to have an assigned PE teacher.

Currently, schools make use of their classroom teachers to perform their PE lessons. These teachers are generally given 6 hours of training or less in order to teach a subject which between the ages of 4 to 11 determine if a child adopts a sporting physical habit for life or disassociate from exercise. Primary school teachers also have a very large workload so their originality and planning of their PE lessons generally slips through the cracks and leads to lessons being projected onto screens with the sole focus of checking off skills from a clipboard instead of basing lessons around fun and physical/social development.

Children need physical education; physical exercise is just as important as a mental one but due to the current structure this isn't being treated as such.

Studies have found that in KS1 pupils only engage in only 90 minutes of PE a week whereby 74% of these were game based and these were partly being delivered by unqualified Teaching Assistants. KS2 students recieved 96 mins with only 44% game based and delivered predominantly by external coaches. By having a set PE teacher for the school, children will get the education they truly deserve which will help tackle the childhood obesity problem that is becoming more and more apparent in day to day life. It will also encourage a love of physical activity which will benefit them through all stages of their life.

So, I ask that everyone please sign and share this petition to encourage the government to up the budget given to schools to cover the cost of a very key staff member currently lacking throughout our schools.

Thank you!
