THE JUICE

The State of Colorado is preparing to integrate a new unemployment benefits system and so far, it has only created a state of pandemonium, unease, and anxiety for thousands. Claimants received an email on December 18th informing them that federal benefits were ending on December 31, 2020. In the email, it was broadcasted that, "by law, we cannot pay partial weeks, so given this expiration date, the last payable week for benefits under these programs is December 26, 2020". While this posed no threat for some, for many it was a detrimental discovery. Coloradan's previously requested unemployment benefits every two weeks, and the balance for many of these claimants amounted to just one week's pay.

On Tuesday, December 29th, another email arrived in claimants inboxes directing them to request payment January 3rd, even if that wasn't their scheduled date to request. The email threatened, "you may experience payment delays if you do not request payment on Sunday, January 3rd", later informing claimants "Colorado’s PEUC system closed to new applications on December 26 and will remain closed while we complete this reprogramming effort". Federal aid was expiring and some claimants still had a benefit balance, but the state informed them of the cutoff three days after the deadline to apply.

Nervously, many claimants attempted to request benefits on January 3rd, only to receive an error message that read:

No Weeks to Claim

You have no weeks available for which you have not already requested payment. To reopen your claim, click here. You will be redirected to another application to complete the claim.

When claimants attempted to reopen their claims, they received an error message that read:

Exhausted Benefits

You have received all benefits available through this application system. To see if you are eligible for further benefits under the Pandemic Unemployment Assistance (PUA) program, file a Pandemic Unemployment Assistance Claim here

FINALLY! OH, WAIT...

Colorado's PEUC system closed to new applications on December 26 and will remain closed while we complete this reprogramming effort, and guess what? The PUA system is currently closed to new applications while the state awaits guidance from the U.S. Department of Labor. Hundreds of claimants, those who were told to request January 3rd only to receive a "no weeks left to claim" message, reached out to Daniel Chase, the Chief of Staff for the Colorado Department of Labor and Employment. Looking for his advice on what to do, he only replied with a simple copy and paste response that read:

This notice was sent in error. Unfortunately, you have no further benefits to collect from us until we implement the new federal programs. That will take several weeks. Keep an eye on your email for next steps.

HELP US WIN THIS FIGHT!

COVID-19 was an unexpected threat that rapidly took control of our country. What are these Coloradan's supposed to do without an income for a month, or quite possibly longer?

The constituents of the state have formed together to create a Facebook group as a self-help Q&A, but there is little to no information for the aforementioned claimants. A signature from you would greatly increase the chances of the high-ranking government officials in Colorado to do something about this payment lapse problem, instead of instructing them to simply "wait".
