The City of Harare Mayor has been arrested and denied bail. The state are saying that they still need to continue their investigation and yet they should have had substantial grounds for a legal charge at the time of his arrest. 

The case he is being charged for is that his sister and friend were awarded council stands. Regardless of the fact that the stands that were awarded are not in his council ward both individuals were on the waiting list for 2 years and were awarded stands in line with council procedure. 

His arrest is violation of Section 50 of the constitution. 

Jacob Mafume is the people elected Mayor and has already started implementing projects geared towards the betterment of livelihoods in Greater Harare. 

We demand that as a minimum Jacob is granted bail and released. We oppose the government’s attempt to subvert the will of the people by falsely arresting the elected mayor.  The people’s mayor Jacob Mafume must be released Now!!
