Condemn the violent suppression of freedom of speech

Letter to
Government of Turkey
Stop State Violence

We the undersigned state in the strongest terms our determination to support the points underscored in the statement prepared and signed by a broad community of our colleagues in Turkey.

As members of the academia, we strive to direct our students to think independently and critically, encouraging them to express their thoughts peacefully, and nurturing them to become individuals with a keen social consciousness and sense of responsibility.

Freedom of speech and thought is an essential component of democracy and is enshrined in the Turkish constitution. In democracies, rather than controlling or disciplining the citizens for expressing their thoughts peacefully, officers of the state ought to hear all of them out, independently of their identities or political views.

We condemn the violent suppression of freedom of speech and the right to peaceful protest that we observed in Istanbul and elsewhere in Turkey. We demand an immediate end to the violence and that those unjustly detained and held in custody be released forthwith.

We are determined to continue to do our share in ensuring that universities around the world remain as environments of education and research which encourage and promote freedom of thought and other democratic principles.
