Mickelle Matthew started this petition to Government of the Virgin Islands and

One word to describe the Class of 2021 would be “resilient”. In their ninth grade year, these students were faced with the struggles of attending school in a split session format due to being hit by two category five hurricanes within two weeks. As their high school years progressed, these students were faced with challenges such as losing their fields in their sophomore year, school buildings being condemned and having to re-locate to the modulars in their junior year, and of course the coronavirus, which deprived them of having a “normal” senior year. After every year was filled with disappointments, these students saw the light at the end of the tunnel. This light was a graduation. An event that would allow them to forget about the trials and tribulations and celebrate their hard work with their families and friends. These students were ecstatic when they heard that there were graduation plans being made for them to have a graduation that would be as close to normalcy as possible; however, this all changed when last minute plans by the Virgin Islands Department of Education canceled these SAFE and APPROVED plans leaving the students with a mockery of a graduation. Join the fight and help the senior classes on St.Thomas and St.Croix get the traditional graduation ceremony that they deserve!
