The 2018 Sierra Leonean Elections: All Sierra Leoneans Matter!

0 have signed. Let’s get to 1,500!

In 2006, the Sierra Leonean parliament amended the Citizenship Clause in the 1973 Sierra Leonean constitution and the 1991 Sierra Leonean Constitution (as amended) allowing for Sierra Leoneans living abroad and who are citizens of other countries to reclaim the citizenship of their country of birth (Sierra Leone) - hence called "Dual-Citizenship". Since the Citizenship Act of 2006 was signed by former President Ahmad Tejan Kabbah, it has remained in effect and upheld by even the incumbent All People's Congress (APC) government since it took over power in 2007. Today, the government and some political parties have resorted to the violation of the same Dual Citizenship Amendment Act of 2006 by refusing to award party symbols to Sierra Leoneans who hold dual citizenship in other countries to run for parliamentary and local council positions in the upcoming March 7, 2018 general elections. For Sierra Leoneans who genuinely care about uplifting the country, we care for and about the inclusion of all Sierra Leoneans in the upcoming elections. We believe that we are all Sierra Leoneans and cannot be eliminated from our country's important decision making process just because we pledged allegiance to another country. Sierra Leone is our country of birth where our mothers, fathers and other family members were born and still live. Any Sierra Leonean who cares about Sierra Leone must embrace other Sierra Leoneans wanting to be part of the remaking process.

We are therefore prevailing on the government of Sierra Leone and political parties to rethink their strategy of eliminating an important leadership bloc from participating in the electoral process. We are also asking the international community, all Diplomatic Missions to Sierra Leone, the United States of America, Leader of the Free World, the British High Commission to Sierra Leone, the African Union and ECOWAS to stand with the people of Sierra Leone at home and abroad. In the coming elections, all Sierra Leoneans matter. All Sierra Leoneans who satisfy the conditions of the 2006 Citizenship Amendment Act and other conditions must be allowed to freely participate in the electoral process.
