The sporting culture in Gros Islet has diminished exponentially over the last decade.  The level of crowd support for sporting activities held in the community is evidence that young people and indeed the wider society have lost interest in the unifying nature of sports.

The names of the houses and facilities at the Gros Islet Primary and Infant School does nothing to deal with this issue, neither does it provide any level of historical perspective and therefore motivation for the next generation of athletes. While individuals such as John Eugene and Francis "Baba" Lastic contribute to their sporting discipline during and after their careers, the houses are currently named after horses: Percheron, Shire, Clydesdale and Appaloosa. There is also no name for the Gros Islet court or playing field.

This petition seeks to rename the houses at the Gros Islet Primary and Infant Schools and nearby facilities after former students from the community who had a significant impact in their sporting disciplines. This will serve as a way to show appreciation to these individuals while providing the next generation with examples to work towards emulating.
