Some days ago, there was a boat mishap on the waterways of Bakana, Degema Local Government Area of Rivers State, Nigeria. 24 passengers on-board were drowning safe for Joseph (Joe) Blankson; a young man, happily married with 2 children. He was a very good swimmer. Like most people, he would have been satisfied with just saving himself, but no he didn't.

Rather he went on a rescue mission with the fishermen around the area. He single-handedly saved 1, 2, 3,4, 5, 6, 7 persons. At this point, everyone and himself would have hailed his heroic effort. But he still went for the 8th, 9th, 10th, 11th, 12th and even the 13th person. After rescuing these number of persons, he must have been exhausted, but when he saw that there were still more people to be rescued, he went into the river again to recuse the 14th person. Due to the exhaustion he has already suffered from, it wasn't to be this time around as he died in the process.

Joseph (Joe) Blankson saved 13 people but lost his life. I have never seen such display of heroism and selfless service since I was born. This can only be compared to what the Holy Bible said in John 15:13 that  "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends".

Joe Blankson, God grant your soul perfect peace in His bosom. You ‘are’ indeed a great man.

I hereby call on the Government of Rivers State of Nigeria to immortalise Joe Blankson and also provide for the family he left behind. Such heroic effort deserved even both State and National Honours. It is not only politicians who loots our public treasury that should be given awards or immortlaised. Joseph (Joe) Blankson in every sense of it should be honoured and immortalised.
