Single use plastics and trash are collecting in our rivers and waterways at an alarming rate. A quick trip to a local river or lake in Ontario and you'll be hard-pressed to not stumble upon trash, the worst of it being micro-trash.

By now you've likely seen articles talking about the environmental restoration happening during this period of social distancing and isolation. Humanity is inside, and the environment is benefiting.

But in some ways, the environment is not benefiting.

Organizations across the country have rightly paused river cleanups. They’re doing their part in stopping the spread of COVID-19. We must stay inside. We must practice social distancing.

But while we pause, the problem of trash and pollution in our waters continues. At this moment, there’s nothing we can do. We’re stuck, having to accept that our rivers and waterways continue to flood with trash.

When we emerge from this pandemic, river cleanups will be more important than ever. Ending the use of single use trash will be more important than ever. We continue to abuse the environment, and we suffer most in times of helplessness.

We must call upon the Ontario government to end the use of single use trash. Let them know this system is not okay, and we must find a better way. Our rivers and waterways are suffering, and there has to be end to this crisis.
