The Labrador Straits section of the Trans Labrador Highway is in a state of serious disrepair and has become unsafe to travel in many areas. The pavement is more than 30 years old and is in serious need of immediate replacement, especially the approimately 50 kms from the Quebec-Labrador border to the Town of Pinware. There have been many incidents of serious and costly damage caused to vehicles and stories of near accidents between vehicles, especially at night and in fog as motorists, including tractor trailers try to navigate around the many potholes that are in the road surface. This region sees much heavy commercial traffic passing through to other areas of Labrador and to Newfoundland and much tourist traffic as well. This year, tourists are actually turning back rather than travel this treacherous section of highway. For the safety of the travelling public and to mitigate the negative impacts this is having economically we call upon the Government of Newfoundland and Labrador to immediately take action to have the section from the Quebec-Labrador border to Pinware paved this current construction season (2017) and to have the sections from Pinware to Pinware River Bridge and Country Cat Pond to Red Bay paved next year (2018).
