Asia Bibi is a woman facing public persecution, discrimination, and intimidation in Pakistan, originally imprisoned under the accusation of sipping from a cup of water she offered to her fellow fruit-picking colleagues.  As she did not share the same faith as those workers, she is considered an infidel and relegated to a lower caste.

Had the courts found her guilty, this would be ruled a crime of blasphemy.  She has been found not guilty, and the accusations false. Her compatriots are baying for blood, with many threatening to kill her should she be released from prison.  The Pakistan Supreme Court is now reviewing its decision after signing an agreement with radicals.

New Zealanders recognise the dignity and intrinsic value of all human life, regardless of faith, gender, and ethnicity. This is a matter of human rights, and religious and ideological freedom.

We petition the New Zealand Government to grant Asia and her family safe passage to New Zealand and asylum at the first legal opportunity, and ask that Parliament review this matter with urgency.
