Simon Nyamu started this petition to Government of Kenya and

Safaricom and other mobile service providers should not reuse Kenyans’ phone number at any instance!!!

Many cases have arisen about the process of Safaricom reusing one’s number and allocated to a new individual based on one not being able to top up their account within a period of four months.

A phone number is an ID like the normal Kenyan ID card; in that, if once allocated to an individual, it can never be switched to anyone else. This is to ensure maximum security measures are put in place.

In the case of security, one’s phone number is used to ascertain their consent and their originality, to curb cybercrime and plagiarism. Moreover, lately, when one requires a service from the government, ranging from a simple business permit application to the application of a passport, one must submit their phone number in order to serve as an identification per person. Greatly, banks use phone numbers as a security tag. One losing their number pronounces that their accounts are vulnerable to accessibility to a third party.

Over time, we have lost our loved ones. Their numbers have been issued out without considering the trauma one faces when they come across their deceased numbers in use. It makes them more agonizing and it paints a picture that their loved ones do not matter, and these companies show they are all about the money. Moreover, during this period of the COVID-19 pandemic.
