SAVE KODAGU FROM COMMERCIAL LAND CONVERSIONS
Kodagu or Coorg , a tiny district tucked away in the lush green foothills of western ghats of Karnataka in India is a natural abode of diverse flora and fauna. Famous for its serene landscapes, world-class coffee, majestic valleys and waterfalls is home for a small group of people and diverse wildlife .However, this innately green land is now fighting for its life. This tranquil district had to weather the incessant onslaught on its pristine nature in the name of development. Unscientific and irrational projects have affected its health over the years.
For Instance -The destruction seen now -
• Planting of teak in most of the forest land has driven our mighty elephants and other wildlife
homeless, resulting in an ever increased Human-Animal conflict.
• Mindless urbanization and excessive tourism has resulted in water scarcity ,increased traffic through forests(resulting in death of wildlife) and Garbage Dump.
• High tension electric lines through forest and plantations have paved way for cutting down Lakhs of trees .
• The proposed railway line and four-lane highways will indeed add to its woe.
More trees will be wiped out during the new projects of commercial conversions which is a big price to pay in the name of urbanization.
• Moreover, the unprecedented rains coupled with landslides and floods during 2018 and 2019 Had taken a great toll on its inhabitants, who haven’t yet come out of the nightmare of losing their kith and kin and loss of their hard-earned property.
Have we not learnt from these horrific destructions ? “Earth provides enough to satisfy a man’s need but not his greed”
The Recent amendment to the Section 95 of the Land Revenue Act, by the Government
of Karnataka is a great threat to all farmers and agricultural land in the state of Karnataka, including Kodagu . It has indeed pushed kodagu out of the frying pan into the raging flames as it seems to be a gateway for rapid conversion of agricultural land into industrial and commercial sites. This new Act will make it effortless for business men and companies to acquire this pristine land and demolish it under the name of urbanization . This Ammendment is a blessing for Organizations that has been heavily lobbying for the purchase of these lands and destroying the green region for their selfish gains.
So what can we, the citizens of India and citizens of the world do to play our part ?
First and foremost , we must unite and raise one voice against the ill- conceived amendment.
1. Designate the Western Ghats region as an ‘eco-sensitive zone’.The Land is fragile.Reports have proved it.
2. Roll back the amendment to Section95 of the land Revenue Act . With clauses / strict measures against the land-conversion for commercial ,allowing only locals who have resided for generations to convert for their livelihood (private homes, hospitals, shops etc.) Prohibit conversion of wet land.
3. Include a panel of experts from areas of sustainability, economic, social and environmentalists in the policy making process.
Let us stand together against this uncontrolled free for all land conversion Act, before we lose the few, natural oasis that are undiluted by the commercial, profit-hungry giants.
Sign the petition to conserve our mother nature.
