GOJ to remove protectionist duties on cement if CEMEX votes to impose royalties on CCCL
Jamaicans are paying more for cement because of the duties on imported cement that are there only to protect Carib Cement Company Ltd. The ultimate owner of Carib Cement, CEMEX, is using royalty payments to extract profits tax free from the company without any benefit to Jamaican taxpayers and minor shareholders. Up to four percent of earnings, not profits, earnings, will be payable to CEMEX every year. This could mean $800,000,000 this year alone and billions of dollars taken out of the company tax free over the next few years. Minor shareholders will not see any benefit to our sacrifices in paying more for cement and our government will collect less taxes as a result of this. Why should our government continue to force us to pay higher cement prices for this multinational company to take away profits without paying taxes that benefit our country?
Stand up to multinational corporations that are raping our country!
