Close Schools Ireland started this petition to Government of Ireland and

Norma Foley must resign as Minister for Education due to her constant failures since becoming Minister for Education in June last year. We believe that she has failed Irish students on many occasions and does not have our best interests at heart.

Minister Foley lacks the experience to be in such an important position. She was a secondary school teacher as recently as January 2020, and she is a first-time TD with no previous national legislative or policy-making experience. She has turned off comments on Instagram and blocked people on Twitter for voicing their opinion — which proves she clearly does not care about the people she represents.

Around 6,500 Leaving Cert students were negatively affected by 2 coding errors discovered in last year’s calculated grades process, meaning an estimated 10% of students received a grade lower than they should have. Norma refused to apologise to the students affected.

She has ignored or not sought advice from NPHET on opening schools, lied to the Irish people in true Trumpian style claiming she had sought agreement among all stakeholders when she had not, and has further mislead on the safety of schools.

The last straw was when she decided to reopen schools for Leaving Cert students from January 11th, when cases and hospitalisations in Ireland are at an all-time high since the Covid-19 pandemic began.

Norma, please resign now to protect our students and teachers.
