One of the most barbaric wars of recent history started in Ukraine on 24th February 2022 with an invasion by the Russian military. All major cities in Ukraine as well as dozens of towns and villages found themselves simultaneously under indiscriminate continuous attack, often wiping out entire communities, including schools, hospitals, residential estates, churches and infrastructure. Putin in addition has expressed his readiness to use nuclear weapons. There are also indicators that he will not stop at Ukraine.

The invasion is backed by a well resourced highly autocratic regime created over two decades by Putin and his henchmen, whose primary policy is to deceive rendering diplomacy useless. These resources mainly come from the sale of oil, gas and other commodities. The buyer is us - the west.

The most powerful weapon against this evil is to stop financially supporting it. We have seen an unprecedented level of sanctions and travel bans adopted by governments across the world. Ireland can continue this effort by breaking off all trading with Russia, and freezing of all assets in the State, which generate profits for Russian oligarchs, business people and companies, and consequently - Putin's regime.
