Repeal the Repressive Laws.

Father Stan Swamy was killed by the government using UAPA as a tool. The most valuable tribute to the human rights activists will be to continue striving to change the 'UAPA no-bail clause' against which he had filed a plea in court.  Sign the petition to force government to Repeal the Repressive Laws.

MURL expresses condolences on the demise of Father Stan Swami

Movement Against UAPA And Other Repressive Laws 'MURL' is deeply saddened by the death of Father Stan Swami, a relentless warrior of human rights and justice.  His is not a natural death, it is a murder committed by the state by implicating him in a fabricated case. The state, the police and the judiciary are equally culpable in this cruelty to an 84-year-old priest. MURL national leaders had the opportunity to interact with Father at Bagaicha in Ranchi, after his release from Jharkhand jail. We saw there many tribal people and others getting various kinds of education and awareness, especially in social welfare activities and constitutional rights.

He was such a busy person even at that age and we could interact with him only for a few hours. He was a very friendly person. MURL was closely following his activism among the Tribals in Jharkhand. He protested the massive presence of the Tribal people in Jharkhand jails.  In 2015 and 2016, along with Sudha Bharadwaj, Prashant Rahi (who are in jail now for many years), Father Stan formed Persecuted Prisoners Solidarity Committee and tried to bring to light the fate of the prisoners in Jharkhand jails and tried to extend legal and other types of help to the undertrials as well as convicted political prisoners.

He was much pained by the displacement of the Adivasis in the guise of various development projects that reaped humongous profits to big corporate cronies of the the government but brought about huge misery upon the Adivasis. It is this activism that earned him the wrath of both the authorities and the corporates. And this led to his implication in the false case of Bhima-Koregaon. The cruelty meted out to him will remain a permanent blemish on our criminal justice system. His legacy helping the most disadvantaged of the society and fighting for their rights is to be carried forward.

MURL Expresses its deep condolences to the bereaved family and close ones of Father Stan Swami.
