Rename Lal Chowk, Srinagar to Shyama Prasad Chowk

Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee very firmly opposed Article 370 of the Constitution of India and worked for full and complete integration of Jammu & Kashmir with the rest of India.

Due to differences with Prime Minister Nehru, he resigned from the Congress party and the Union Cabinet in 1951 and founded Bharatiya Jana Sangh, the precursor to Bharatiya Janata Party.

He asked Nehru  "If India's Constitution is good enough for the rest of India, why should it not be acceptable to Jammu & Kashmir?"  and said   “ek desh mein do vidhan, do pradhan aur do nishan nahi chalenge”  (one nation cannot have two constitutions, two prime ministers, and two national emblems).

At that time, it was compulsory for every Indian to secure a permit to enter the state of Jammu & Kashmir.  In protest against this policy, Shyama Prasad entered Jammu & Kashmir without a permit and was arrested on 11th May, 1953.

He was detained at a damp, cold cottage outside the city where he fell sick but was not given proper medical care.  On 23rd June, 1953 while still under custody, he passed away after what was reported as a heart attack.

The untiring efforts of Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee is the reason Indian citizens do not need  any permit and can enter Jammu & Kashmir freely.

We urge the Government of India to change the name of Lal Chowk, Srinagar to Shyama Prasad Chowk as a token of the nation's respect and gratitude for this inspiring and visionary leader.
