Mumbai -You have shown the world your Heart , Show them your Spine

We did it again ! We didn't buckle under intense pressure ! We stoically and passively accepted our "fate" ! We opened our doors and hearts to help our fellowmen ! We did what we always do.
Ours is not to question WHY , ours is only to tolerate or die !
The recent torrential downpour that hit Mumbai on 29 th August , 2017 and the resulting deluge that ensued tested the Mumbaikar's nerves once again ! And once again the common Mumbaikar rose to the occasion and delivered ... With his heart.
Yes definitely my Mumbai , amchi Mumbai has heart.
Mumbai has heart ❤
And maybe it's because of this softness and this willingness to tolerate (corruption, an irresponsible and irreverent municipal govt/ state govt , deluges, terrorist strikes , apathy from those whom we trust and pay taxes to for our welfare ) that Mumbai is always held to ransom .
Maybe It is time we started acting like the uncouth North , or the Marxist East or the hot headed South . ( Sorry for my prejudices , but hey , we need to have some spine , some pride and chauvinism for our city and behave "comme il faut" in this country,. viz. Like hooligans demanding attention/ resolution of our problems , just like the rest of this country has been doing all along !!!)
Niceness / supreme resilience / the Mumbai heart have no place in India .
Of course this does not mean we will stoop to lowly levels of uncivilized agitation. God knows we have enough of that drama in India ! But that also does not mean that we will be pacifists and meekly surrender to our fate.
Sure , this was a test of man's endurance against nature's fury !I understand that !
It was "beyond our control" is what we will get to hear on the coming weeks and months from all public servants ( oops, did I say "servants" , nay, I meant " masters" !)
*Fact* : according to a leading newspaper article , the MET department had given the state government a warning of things to come . But the warning was ignored. It was only when reports of dire flooding were pouring in that the govt reacted and pressed the panic button. By then , more than half of Mumbai was at work or at school.
*Fact* : few bureaucrats will get a slap on the wrist , few heads will roll over the coming months , we resilient , large hearted , forgiving Mumbaikars will go on surviving through this city's ordeals.. Blissful Oblivion will set in once again....UNTIL THE NEXT TIME !
*Fact* : we will discuss this at length, curse the authorities , blame corruption , even blame ourselves for enduring it all.
*Fact* : We will heal , we will eventually be able to laught at it, numerous cartoons and caricatures and the ever- updated Amul ads will come up on our hoardings and in our media .
And then , WE WILL FORGET AND MOVE ON.
Today, ...I am relieved...
Today ,Me and mine were spared , we were all safe and sound . But if nothing untoward happened to me , doesn't mean that we will be the lucky ones who get away , the next time and every time... Someday we may be at the receiving end... And it may be too late to get retribution and accountability and most importantly prevention of such events in future .
Just writing about it and discussing it ad nauseum won't work. As one Mumbaikar quipped "Why do we need BMC / state govt to save us when we do a damn good job of it ourselves"
We need to show spunk... Not in extreme manners , obviously... But show that we will not take this cavalier attitude lying down...Don't wait for some "activist" to do our dirty work..
So, my fellow Mumbaikars, I plead with you all to get this movement going, how to ensure that Mumbai, the highest tax paying city gets its due. We have some of the smartest brains here. Yet, we cannot hit upon a solution to alleviate our misery . Show that you will not take this apathy , this unfair treatment by the bureaucratic world lying down.
SEND YOUR SUGGESTIONS , OPINIONS ,ADVICE TO THE CENTRE . DEMAND ACCOUNTABILITY AND TRANSPARENCY. Where do our funds go? I hate that we are so at the mercy of the Civic and state officials. They get to play God.. They get to decide which drain to clean, which manhole cover to fix , which hapless Mumbaikar to kill ! They have so much money. Yet they play tic tac toe with our city' s priorities and people ! Are we so backward that we have to "wait for our turn" in getting our numerous problems solved . They have the manpower, they are flush with resources , yet their fancy *statues* get priority over our BASIC welfare needs !
SADDA HAQ AITHEY RAKH !
BE VIGILANT OF THE CANDIDATES YOU VOTE FOR. IF YOU ARE LIABLE FOR TOUGH SCRUTINY BY YOUR GOVERNMENT , THEN PUT YOUR CANDIDATES FOR ELECTION UNDER THAT SAME TOUGH SCRUTINY.
VOTE FOR THE RIGHT CHANGE.
DEMAND THAT THE MANHOLES, POTHOLES IN YOUR AREA GET FIXED ASAP !
DEMAND THAT THE GARBAGE IN YOUR AREA IS PICKED UP ON TIME.
DEMAND THAT CLEANLINESS IS MAINTAINED. SWACHH BHARAT...?! WHERE ?
DO YOUR BIT TO MAKE YOUR HELPERS , STAFF, ETC. AWARE OF THE IMPORTANCE OF CLEANLINESS .
ENSURE THAT THE MANHOLES HAVE AN INNER GRILL COVERING THEM TO PREVENT ANOTHER MANHOLE DEATH . We cannot afford to lose another Mumbaikar to senseless errors of omission or commission by our Civic staff. Does it not seem to you, dear Mumbaikar, that our life expectancy is declining ?
Are we regressing in time ? We are at the mercy of mosquitoes , rats , and our government' s whims and fancies!
( note the use of the latter' s names in the same breath as the former' s! Pestilence HAS set in , dear Mumbaikar! Let's all unite to demand what we justly deserve !
Nobody else is gonna do it for you ! )
DON'T FORGET WHAT YOU FACED ON THAT FATEFUL DAY ! LET IT REMAIN ETCHED IN YOUR " HEARTS" .
REMEMBER EVERY CHILD WHO LOST A PARENT , EVERY PARENT WHO LOST A CHILD TO THE HEARTLESS MACHINATIONS OF AN APATHETIC SYSTEM !
TODAY, IT WAS SOMEONE ELSE WHO GRIEVED ! TOMORROW IT MAY WELL BE YOU !
