I have been thinking this since last many years why Government conducts different elections (General Elections and Legislative Elections) in different time frames. Why can't both the elections be conducted on a same date for a same district or town. A person enters a polling booth and casts two votes- 1 for electing the MPs and other for electing the MLAs.

Let me introduce you all with some facts and figures.

Below is the year wise costs to the exchequer in conducting General Elections since Independence.

Year Cost (in Rs cr)

1952 10.45

1957 5.9

1977 23

1980 54

1989 154

1991 359

1996 597

1998 666

1999 880

2009 1,400

We can see the amount is huge and this does not include the expenses incurred for security and the amount political parties will spend.

The benefits are merging both general elections and state elections are many:

  • All the resources like security personnel, people of different ranks involved in polling and many other resources need to mobilized once in 5 years and this will save huge costs.
  • Secondly, the money political parties spend will also minimize as they have to spend once in 5 years and not after every 1-3 years.
  • If the Government in centre and states are formed at same time, both can work at the same pace and coordination for national development.
  • The amount saved by the exchequer can be used for development schemes and also for increasing military capabilities.

I request the citizens of the country to sign the petition so that I make reach the correct authority.
