Indian Big fat Weddings have been about celebrations and merry-making! But the wastage and harmful effects associated with Indian weddings are tremendous!
Food- We tend to offer a 100 varieties to our guests in terms of dishes- It is a status thing after all! However, Shocking statistics have been observed with regard to food wastage in Weddings. About one-fifth of the food served at weddings and social gatherings is discarded. Bangalore alone wastes 943 tonnes of food during weddings annually. This food can feed crores of people suffering from hunger and malnutrition. The practice of presenting a hundred dishes and wasting food needs serious attention!
Pollution- The amount of Air pollution and Noise pollution associated with Indian weddings has been neglected usually. Firecrackers and Loudspeakers together contribute to the pollution. The Law says person can be booked for breaching the standard noise level of 45 decibels. But do we follow these rules?
Behind all these issues, the most evident factors involved are money and status symbols. All these issues can be solved if the amount of money spent on Weddings is reduced to an acceptable level. Through this petition, I request the environmental activists, policy makers and government of India to come together to formulate a law imposing an upper limit on the amount of money being wasted on Indian weddings. For Instance a family cannot spend more than 5,00,000 rupees on wedding. I also request government to have policies that will offer benefits and incentives to couples opting for court marriages and Eco-friendly weddings in order to encourage less is more approach in Indian weddings! Along with the government it is also the responsibility of citizens to understand these issues and act accordingly in weddings!
Lets be responsible in our celebrations! Let our joyous moments not harm the environment around! Lets adopt less is more approach in Indian weddings!!
