India is home to over 60 million adults with diabetes (7.8% of the population), of which more than 30 million are undiagnosed or untreated, thus increasing the risk of developing complications and premature mortality.

Given the challenges in early detection and management of diabetes, it is imperative to seek innovative ways that help to expand the reach of health literacy and services among the general population and high risk groups, while also improving management and quality of life in confirmed diabetics. This increases the need for better and effective healthcare programs related to diabetes.

The Indian health care system is struggling with the complex treatment of individual patients. The cost of treatment (approximately Rs 4000 per month for a 30 kg child) is often beyond the reach of many families. By increasing the effectiveness of diabetes related programs would help these 60 million people cope with the struggles of their daily lives.

Suggestion of a few ways by which the government can increase efficiency in providing better health care programs:

1.The government should appoint a commission which makes recommendations for the healthcare system and monitors its performance.
2.Develop partnerships between the public and private sectors that design newer ways to deliver healthcare. An example of this would include diagnostic testing centers.
3.Introduction and successful awareness regarding newer technologies and ways of testing- Example SugarGene(Saliva based diabetes genetic test) .
4.Making hospitals well equipped to tackle health care-acquired infections.
5.Launch of more NCD (Non communicable diseases) Clinics.

To address the growing diabetes epidemic, Team DiaBYEtes has set up a petition urging Indian govt. to increase the money invested to stop diabetes and increase the effectiveness of healthcare programs.
