Bring back the Indian Seafarers stuck on foreign ships for months due to Covid-19

The community of seafarers and merchant navy personnels working on foreign going ships have been stuck for many months and are unable to come back home pertaining the nationwide lockdown in India.

My father who is Captain at one of these ships has been stuck for more than 5 months now even after the contract being completed long before. Life of merchant navy person is vulnerable and extremely difficult. Loneliness and lack of resources/provisions without a clarity in sight whether they will ever return their homes, puts our seafarers in an extreme situation. Drawing from the little conversations I have with my father, the physical and mental health of our seafarers is not stable, and their families on the shore are bearing the brunt of it all alone. Most wives, children and old parents of these seafarers are having a hard time coping with the repercussions of the pandemic all alone along with the mental stress of their loved ones on ships, most of whom can’t even be contacted on a daily basis. The aggravated climatic conditions worsen the situations of the life at ship.

I myself speak to my father once every 3 days and the remaining days are mostly spent in prayers and hope that he is safe and sound. Our seafarers form an integral part of our economy and deserve as much applause and respect for their never ending, untimely and extensive work they put to keep the country working by moving goods, coal, oils and resources.

Hence I request you to understand the gravity of the situation and contribute towards bringing our seafarers back to the safety of their homes and families in India and set another example for the humanity left in the world.
