"Bangla" was anglicised to "Bengali" by the British.

It is high time, we recognise our roots and therefore understand the fact that we should not choose to call our mother tongue, Bangla, something the Britishers decided for us. We, unlike them, can pronounce the word and therefore should refer to it the way it is. The Government of India should, at the very least, recognise this and address the issue.
Per Articles 344(1) and 351 of the Indian Constitution, the eighth schedule should list "Bangla", and not "Bengali" as one of the 22 recognised languages in India.
